God chose for Jesus to be born in a stable to young parents, and for his first visitors to be shepherds because he wanted to show Jesus was a different sort of leader – one who really understands us, gets alongside us, and came to save us all not just the rich and powerful. But Jesus was still a special King, God’s own Son, worthy of attention from rulers all over the world, and the visit of the rich wise men and their choice of gifts reminds of us of this today.
