Nehemiah 2: Deals With Discouragement

When we do the right thing, to help others and serve God, sometimes other people will try to make us stop – they might laugh at us, or call us names, or tell us we can’t do it, or they might try to undo what we are doing, or tell other people that we’re crazy.

But there are always hard moments that try to stop us doing the right thing. Just as Nehemiah carried on building the walls in today’s story, we should carry on doing the right thing – and eventually God will help us succeed, just as Nehemiah and the Israelites did in today’s story.

Nehemiah stood up and said to the nobles, the officials and the rest of the Israelites,

“Don’t be afraid of them. Remember we do this for the Lord, who is great and awesome, and to fight for your families, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes.”

Prayer

Lord God, we thank you that you never ask us to do something difficult without also making sure we have the strength and support we need from you to complete the task.

Help us to ignore those who try to put us off and stay focused only on you, until we have done what you have asked us to do in your name.

Amen
