CREATE & LEARN PLAY KITS

£10 buys a pack of educational and craft materials creative for a child at home

School closures mean that children from the primary schools around Thessaly and Nine Elms have to access online learning resources and do all their work at home.  Many homes don’t have basics like pens and paper for school work, let alone arts and crafts materials and have no spare money in the weekly budget to buy equipment.

Creativity is incredibly important for children’s wellbeing so we are supporting Nine Elms Arts Ministry, Wandsworth Council, Battersea Arts Centre and other local partners to help give every child in our local primary schools access to a Create and Learn Play Kit

Create and Learn Play Kits contain a fantastic array of good quality coloured pens, pencils, felt tips, glues, paper, paints, craft materials and much more.

What we need We have already supplied 230 packs and, with further support from Battersea United Charities another 120 will go out in early June.  But there is still much more to do, We need at least 700 kits, at a cost of approximately £10 each just for the schools in our immediate area. And the plan is to widen the project across Battersea and Wandsworth to help more families.

Can you sponsor some Kits?  If you want to help create some Create & Learn Play Kits for children please sponsor by bank transfer or cheque via the Nine Elms Community Development Fund with the reference ‘Create Kits.

PROVIDING FOOD FOR ANYONE

Raising £12,000 for a refrigerated van

Waste Not Want Not have a simple mission: to take unsold food from New Covent Garden Market which would be thrown away and to make it available at no cost to anyone who would benefit from food.

This small charity has been in operation since 2017 and relies on the help of volunteers to collect, cook and deliver food. WNWN has a great track record with the local authority and with local people. More about Waste Not Want Not can be found HERE

What they need The demands of the COVID19 crisis have increased the challenge of making sure food is delivered safely to the right place. Right now WNWN needs a refrigerated van to transport food safely, which will cost £12,000. They have raised about £4,000 so far.

Can you help? If you can support this purchase there are two ways available:

  1. you can donate through the JustGiving page HERE:

  2. or by bank transfer or cheque via the Nine Elms Community Development Fund with the reference ‘Waste Not Want Not’.

INSPIRING YOUNG PEOPLE

Supporting a Community Youth Leader

FAST is a youth organisation that seeks to inspire young people to achieve their potential. Based on the Thessaly Estates in Battersea and Nine Elms, it works with young people aged 9 - 25 who are at a higher risk of getting involved in gangs, crime and anti-social behaviour.

The project has been successful in providing strong positive role models, and its Vision is for a future where local young people stay out of gangs and criminality and stay in school and succeed.

COVID! Response - FAST have led the local response to the COVID19 crisis on the Thessaly estates by bringing together local leaders regularly to address local needs. They have also set up online youth ZOOM gatherings for young people in lockdown.

What they need FAST is a small charity with a long history of success and is totally dependent on donations. We know them well and support their work. Can you support them too? you can find their details and more information at FAST PROJECT below

ENABLING ONLINE ACCESS

Giving away pre-used laptops, tablets and computers to help get online

Power to Connect is a new project set up to tackle Digital Poverty - the problem of having no internet access in an increasingly online world.

So much today is online, from free school meal vouchers and school classrooms, to benefit claims, to staying in touch with friends and family through Facebook and Zoom. For children this is especially hard when lessons are now online.

COVID19 has highlighted that many people around Thessaly and Nine Elms do not have the means to get online. They cannot afford laptops or tablets.

What they need is the device to get online, and in partnership with Battersea Power Station we are supporting a project to provide digital devices to local people by refurbishing un-needed laptops, tablets and computers. Do you have old devices you can donate? If so please click through to the Power to Connect website and sign up.
